Excerpt:

Sethe's healing process in Beloved is not ideal, particularly by today's standards. People could argue if she even went through a healing process (before Beloved's return, I mean). Eventually, Sethe shares her traumatic experience with Paul D. But she maintains ownership of it, even when Paul D tries to take it as his own. Or Halle's own, rather. Yes, the assault is a square on a mighty American quilt (an object that is often referenced throughout the book), but still, she maintains ownership. And every time someone else tries to take a piece of the pain for themselves--Paul D, the readers, or the unseen Halle--Toni Morrison gives it right back to Sethe.
